Firstly I want to thank and acknowledge the Wingate Foundation for their timely and moral boosting financial support.

Shortly after finishing my PhD in 2005, I was offered my current position as a lecturer in International Health at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. My work combines both teaching on the Master's in International Public Health and research. My research interests are very much related to my PhD – looking at the differences in the socio-cultural aspects of health between different ethnic and cultural groups and the biomedical services offered by most national health services. This is especially in relation to access and provision of maternal and child health services in low and middle income countries.
