My scholarship was used to provide me with funds to visit a prestigious research facility (Scripps Clinic) in San Diego California, USA whilst I was doing my PhD at the University of Birmingham. The visit was important as it enabled me to learn cutting edge research techniques in the area of DNA damage caused by free radicals and the resultant damage to cellular tissue resulting in genetic and immunological changes.
I was successfully awarded my PhD in 1991 and took up a position in pharmaceutical research investigating therapeutic interventions for bone disorders and arthritis.
From this position I moved into the corporate world of MARS petcare and spent several years researching nutritional breakthroughs in cat and dog nutrition.
My career with MARS has developed extensively over the thirteen years I have been with the corporation and I have since held positions in research and development, technical and scientific communications, corporate affairs and I am now Director of WALTHAM - the long term research facility that prides itself on its ethical and caring approach to the understanding of all aspects of petcare and nutritional needs of companion animals.
