I received my Wingate Scholarship in 1993 to pursue a Master's Degree in Music at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia USA. The Curtis has tremendous resources (due to a large endowment) with access to the best teachers and coaches in America. As the vocal department is relatively small, I had many opportunities to perform.

Through a Curtis Initiative I interned twice at the Opera Company of Philadelphia, firstly covering the role of Marguerite in Gounod's Faust and then the role of Fiordiligi in Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte. In addition there were fully staged opera productions at Curtis where I sang the lead (i.e. La Contessa in Mozart's Marriage of Figaro),as well as numerous, recitals, orchestral concerts and Masterclasses with the worlds greatest singers. While at Curtis I won the Pavarotti Competition, and the Washington International Competition.During my 2nd year I was accepted into the Merola Program, a summer course at San Francisco Opera and consequently was invited to become an Adler Fellow, a two year young artist programme run by San Francisco Opera making my debut with the company as Mimi (Puccini's La Boheme).

I worked with Andre Previn, Placido Domingo and Franco Zefferelli to name but a few. I now enjoy an international career as an opera singer and have worked and recorded with Sir Colin Davis and the LSO, the Royal Opera House, New York City Opera, Opera Company of Philadelphia and I have sung at Carnegie Hall. I travel extensively and this year alone I have been to Israel, Macedonia, Italy, Germany, Spain, Philippines and Switzerland. Unfortunately there is not enough space to give all the highlights and tell some of my wonderful opera tales and adventures!

I believe that my Wingate Scholarship enabled me to receive a wonderful foundation artistically and vocally; the disciplines I mastered at the Curtis have opened up many opportunities for me within the opera and classical world. I am proud to be a Wingate recipient and attribute my current success to the opportunity they afforded me. Attending the Curtis Institute really did change my life!
