I received a Wingate scholarship to encourage me in the completion of my first book of poetry, THE MAN IN THE WHITE SUIT. The scholarship gave me the financial footing to commit time to the writing, but more importantly it gave me confidence in my work at a crucial moment. The book went on to win the Forward/Waterstone Prize for Best First Collection, and to be a Poetry Book Society Recommendation. I've just published my second collection, FROM THE WORD GO. In a way, the Wingate award was a seed of encouragement that has blossomed in other ways, as I am now a fulltime writer; my first novel, NEFERTITI: THE BOOK OF THE DEAD was published last year, and is now being published in 12 other languages. Also, my film script, ROMULUS, MY FATHER has been shot, starring Eric Bana, and released in May 2007. And I have had two plays produced, most recently TO REACH THE CLOUDS about the high wire walker Philippe Petit, who walked a high wire between the twin towers in 1974, which was produced at Nottingham Playhouse in the summer of 2006. So, I have the Wingate Scholarship to thank for encouraging me along this course in my life.
