A Thing in Disguise, the Visionary Life of Joseph Paxton, was published by 4th Estate in 2003. It was shortlisted for the Duff Cooper Prize and longlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize. It received some lovely reviews, good sales, and came out in paperback a year later. It's still in print (just). My next book - Taste: the story of Britain through its cooking - was published by Bloomsbury in October 2007 and was awarded one of the Grants for the Arts by the Arts Council of London. I still review books regularly for the Telegraph, and write some features for the Weekend FT, and other magazines.
