The Wingate Scholarship enabled me to focus research and development work with a local community housing co-operative in one of Glasgow’s largest peripheral housing schemes. The work involved the development of a series of visual art projects linked directly to local community regeneration plans, which interrogated and put into action the pedagogical potential of visual art practice as part of processes of redevelopment. This was my first real opportunity to combine research and practice and led to a decision to undertake a PhD, exploring issues of social in/exclusion in the arts, specifically in terms of access to higher education. On completion, I formed fugitivespaces, which aims to further galvanize these concerns with action and research, by identifying and developing new spaces for educational change that lie at the interface between art practice, education and community development.
