In 2004 I applied for funding to complete my D.Phil thesis, “‘A Phoenix Rising’: A History of Baragwanath Hospital, Soweto, South Africa, 1942-1990” which I began as a Rhodes Scholar at St Antony’s College, Oxford. The study is the first complete historical analysis of a hospital that served the black African community during the apartheid era. I completed the thesis in August of 2006 and began a Post Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Saskatchewan, in western Canada. I am in the process of converting my thesis into a book; I am also teaching in the History Department here and have maintained links to South Africa where I will be returning to teach during the summer. In the near future I plan to begin a comparative project which looks at the provision of medical services to oppressed peoples in South Africa and Canada.
